University of Split (UNIST), established in 1974, is a comprehensive scientific and teaching institution, consisting of 11 Faculties, 1 Academy of Arts and 4 Departments. There are around 20,000 students enrolled in its undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programmes and 1,700 employees.
The focus of the research work carried out is on disciplines characterized by natural, cultural, historical, social, economic and other features of the region as a part of the Croatian Adriatic and the Mediterranean region as a whole. This involves research and protection of art and construction heritage, philology, field crops, oceanography and fishing, Adriatic botany and zoology, island and coastal economy, Adriatic tourism, maritime law, nautical science, naval architecture and a range of other specific disciplines such as chemical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, electrical and mechanical engineering, social sciences, kinesiology, humanities, health sciences, forensics.
UNIST is a member of several International networks (EUA, Tethys, UNIADRION, EAIE) that promote internationalisation of HE and exchange of good practices in different disciplines. UNIST is a member of the European University of the Seas alliance, which is building a long-term, joint strategy for education and training with links to research and innovation, and to society, aimed at fostering an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet, with the specific vocation of dealing with the sea.
UNIST is also a cosignatory in over 550 Erasmus+ cooperation agreements and 80 bilateral agreements with universities worldwide. By participating in the Enterprise Europe Network, of which it has been an active member since 2008, UNIST has created a wide network of university-industry collaboration, serving as an opportunity to provide a variety of support services to SMEs and students to gain practical knowledge but also to have an active role in the society.
Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism (FEBT) is a legally independent part of the University of Split. Operating from 1974, it provides study programs in Economics, Business, and Tourism at all levels (from undergraduate to postgraduate). In 2020, FEBT had a combined undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate student population of about 3,000 students. FEBT is a pillar of collaboration providing studies, strategies and programs to companies, public institutions, and national and municipal authorities.
FEBT is an active ERASMUS+ project partner having signed 62 cooperation agreements with institutions from 22 countries and 48 bilateral agreements. FEBT provides business and technical mentoring support to university start-ups through its Student Business Incubator which is a vital member of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the region and it organizes multiple international competitions (e.g., GITR, STup) all with the support of international experts and strategic partners.
FEBT is also providing support in organising DeSci stage and Startup stage at WEB3 conference BlockSplit. FEBT employs 126 staff, of which 89 are involved in the research and teaching process. The development of young researchers is one of FEBT's priorities. The facilities span over 11,000 m2 with 2,155 seats divided into 18 state-of-the-art auditoriums, 4 halls, and IT laboratories. FEBT library ranks second in Croatia with 30,000 monographic publications. In addition, FEBT publishes two scientific journals indexed in Web of Science.
Project Role
The University of Split, Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism (UNIST) leads the Decentralized Science (DeSci) network for sustainability (Work Package 4), creates progress/periodic reports, maps the regional Web3 startup ecosystem, and is responsible for organizing DeSci education for researchers.
With a track record in ERASMUS+ projects, expertise in business and technical mentoring, and involvement in organizing significant events and competitions, UNIST brings valuable knowledge and capabilities to the project. UNIST is also a member of the international Bloxberg network for promotion of blockchain in science, which makes it a great fit to lead the developing of Decentralized Science network as one of project’s main outputs.
