DeSci Workshop – Introduction to Decentralized Science, Blockchain and Web3
Web3 Innovation HUB
101179566 — W3IH — ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE
About the Workshop
An introduction to the foundations of science, blockchain technology, and Web3, exploring how decentralized approaches could address challenges in today's research landscape.
DeSci Workshop introduced students at the Faculty of Economics, University of Montenegro, to the fundamental concepts behind Decentralized Science (DeSci). The session was delivered through a prerecorded workshop held in Split, Croatia, featuring Tomaso Aste, a scientist and academic. The recorded material was subsequently shared with students in Podgorica as part of their learning activities.
The session explored the role of science and some of the challenges associated with centralized structures in contemporary research before introducing blockchain technology and Web3. Historical context and explanations of key technological concepts helped establish a foundation for understanding decentralized systems and their potential applications.
Key Topics
The workshop covered several foundational themes:
- Understanding science – the role of scientific research and challenges associated with existing research structures.
- Blockchain technology – its origins, core principles, and potential applications.
- Web3 and decentralization – the evolution towards decentralized digital environments and new models of participation.
- Smart contracts – how programmable agreements can facilitate automated processes within blockchain-based systems.
- Decentralized science (DeSci) – how these technologies may enable new approaches to research, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
About the Project
The Web3 Innovation Hub (W3IH) project, number 101179566 – ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE, is implemented within the Erasmus+ programme. The project aims to build capacity in higher education institutions through the integration of Web3 technologies and decentralised science in academic research and education.
